A big crowd beaming with enthusiasm and excitement once again gathered on December 1, 2011 at the main entrances of VSU's lower and upper campuses to witness the ceremonial switching on of Christmas lights installed on the trees along the VSU mall. The event simply signals that advent season is already on the air. This yearly undertaking at VSU started in 2008 during the presidency of Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo and is being carried out every first day of December.

For the past three years, it has been observed that a number of individuals (either by family or in a group) dropped-by the University entrance to take souvenir pictures not to miss the attractive Christmas decorations of the campus. Thus, the University made it sure that the campus will be adorned with head-turning Christmas symbols and lights.

The program, "Christmas Cheers in VSU," kicked-off with a fervent prayer from Rev. Fr. Martin Ando Bañoc, Holy Spirit Parish Priest, that this year's celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ will be filled with joy and that love will always be in our hearts. The VSU Choral Ensemble joyously treated the audience with their rendition of "Joy to the World", "Do Your Hear What I Hear", and the Tagalog Christmas Medley "Paskong-Pasko na Talaga."On behalf of the University President, Dr. Jose L. Bacsumo, who was on an official travel to Germany for a very important mission, Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, VSU's Vice President for Planning and Resource Generation, conveyed in his message the deeper meaning of Christmas which is beyond the adornments, the symbols and lights that surround the University. Dr. Tulin emphasized that the season is the celebration of the coming of the Savior. "Therefore, let us all be reminded that the center of our celebration is Christ. Let us all make the preparations for his coming," Dr. Tulin admonished.

He also pointed out that Christmas is the season of faith, love, joy and peace that were symbolized by the four candles that we lit during the four weeks of advent. "As Christians, let us see each other in the image of Christ and we will really have a meaningful celebration of the season."

Likewise, he acknowledged the concerted efforts of Dr. Roberto C. Guarte, VP for Administration and Finance; Engr. Alan B. Loreto, Executive Officer; Engr. Nestor M. Israel, Director of the General Services Office and the rest of his staff for doing their best in making the occasion a resounding success.

The ceremonial switching on of Christmas lights was done by Dr. Tulin, together with other vice presidents—Dr. Oscar B. Posas, VP for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Othello B. Capuno, VP for Research and Extension.

The fireworks display, which added glamour to the celebration, captured the eyes of the spectators. The different lanterns hanged in various places also spiced up the ceremony.
