The Visayas State University (VSU), through the University Student Services Office (USSO) headed by Engr. Manolo B. Loreto, Jr., Dean of Students, hosted the Regional Expanded Students’ Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGP-PA) Committee Meeting on March 9, 2015 at the VSU Center for Continuing Education.  A total of 24 members of the Regional Scholarship Committee and Scholarship Coordinators from the different state universities and colleges (SUCs) and line agencies of Region 8 attended the said meeting and tackled the following agenda: status of submission of ESGP-PA reports, summer program, updates from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and issues and concerns of SUCs.

The meeting was presided over by Dir. Restituto B. Macuto, DSWD 8 Asst. Regional Director, for and on behalf of Dr. Maura Consolacion D. Cristobal, Director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of Region 8, who was also attending an equally important event in Tacloban City that day.

In his welcome message on behalf of VSU President Jose L. Bacusmo, Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, VP for Instruction, expressed his elation for the effort exerted by the members of the scholarship committee which is directed towards poverty alleviation specifically for the benefit of the ESGP-PA student-scholars in the different SUCs in Eastern Visayas.  Dr. Tulin hoped that the meeting would address the real essence of harmonizing the policies as well as the problems encountered in the implementation of the program.  He also expressed confidence that the implementers of the scholarship are united to help the students.

“This program of the government with the help of other agencies like CHED, DSWD, DOLE, and the SUCs can really make this program a success,” Dr. Tulin averred.  He also emphasized the ulterior motive why the program existed—to ensure that the students would be able to graduate, change their lives, change their socio-economic status, and become productive citizens.

The participants come from the CHED – 1, DSWD – 2, DOLE – 1, Eastern Samar State University – 3, Eastern Visayas State University – 1, Leyte Normal University – 2, Naval State University – 1, Northwest Samar State University – 1, Palompon Institute of Technology – 2, Samar State University – 2,  Southern Leyte State University – 1, University of Eastern Philippines – 1, and VSU – 6.  JFMBaldos
