The Visayas Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Program (ViCAARP) hosted by VSU, entered into an agreement that will revive and strengthen its partnerships with state colleges and universities, and agencies in Region VIII.

Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, VSU president and chair of the Regional Research and Development Coordinating Council, signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with VSU Vice President for Research and Extension and ViCAARP director Dr. Othello B. Capuno and heads of the 24 member institutions, May 6.

The agreement seeks to promote science and technology applications for agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector. Through the consortium, VSU as the host institution and its members can share resources and create venues for joint planning, monitoring and evaluation of projects.

Together, the institutions can create strategic research and development, contribute to the spread and use of technologies, and advocate informed policies.

Based on the May 6 joint meeting at the PhilRootcrops at VSU, the University of the Philippines-Visayas Tacloban Campus (UPV-Tac) and the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) will become new members of ViCAARP.

PIT in Tabango specializes on marine and aquatic resources and has implemented extension projects including skills training, livelihood programs, social services, environmental, and information, communication and education programs.

UPV-Tac, on the other hand, focused on marine sciences and fisheries. The college will look into interventions in the areas of cell biology, aquatic biosciences, natural products chemistry, plant physiology, biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and computer science applications in AANR.

The MOA specifies for open and voluntary membership to all government and non-government institutions who have outstanding efforts in strategic research and development in AANR, technology spread and use, and policy advocacy.
