FIVE
YEAR RESEARCH AND EXTENSION DEVELOPMENT PLAN
(CY 2004-2008)
The Visayas State University (VSU) has a rich heritage of agricultural
research. VSU has provided information vital to root crop, abaca,
coconut, rice and corn production. As a center of excellence
in agriculture, the University has positioned itself to effectively
support and augment the industry of food, feed, fuel, and fiber
production while significantly improving methods that protect
natural resources. Over the past years the University actively
led in creating awareness in preserving the environment and
research on natural resources has been intensified which is
a timely response to a dangerous trend of environmental deterioration.
In line with the national and regional responsibilities, the
University strategically positioned in providing information
for agricultural production and environmental protection applicable
to situations beyond the borders of Leyte. Although improvement
of agricultural output is the mainstay of VSU, research on environmental
conservation and protection take unprecedented emphasis as a
response to the changing values of the environment that society
has placed and the general public’s awareness on the role
of environment protection and sustainable development. VSU has
further envisioned research on areas like information technology,
and energy saving technology, diversifying the scope of research
and capabilities.
One
of the key strengths of the University is the ability to connect
and link research processes and capabilities to teaching students
and upgrading budding young scientists and share research results
through modern extension and communication techniques. The breadth
of disciplines found within the research system of VSU and the
tradition of collegiality have permitted the development of
research programs; the capability of carrying ideas in conceptual
form and laboratory stages of research through to field applications
and prototype development. The University also has established
a number of successful partnerships with other academic institutions,
government and non- government organizations, industry and researchers
nationally and internationally. Opportunities for continued
strength in this area are also continually addressed. These
partnerships provide better understanding of opportunities and
diversity, which prepare students and faculty to effectively
adapt to the workplace of a rapidly changing world.
This
document provides the framework to guide the University in its
research and development programs for the next five years (2004
- 2008). The R and D issues and agenda are identified and strategies
in achieving the targets are described.
