The conversion of ViSCA to a Visayas State University, the School of Veterinary Medicine automatically became the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The offering of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine started in 1992. This is a ladderized curriculum which was later revised into a straight six year curriculum in 2001. It has 2 Departments, the Department of Basic Veterinary Sciences and the Paraclinical and Clinical Sciences. Philippines is one among the top five countries in the world with the highest cases of rabies. Rabies accounts to about 250 to 290 human deaths each year, mostly children below 15 years of age. According to DOH National Rabies Prevention and Control Program, 98% of human rabies cases were due to dog bites. Unfortunately, 90% of the victims were bitten by their own pet dogs.
Rabies is caused by a virus and is transmitted primarily through a bite from a rabid animal. The virus is literally bullet-shaped (Photo from: WCVM, Uni. of Saskatchewan) and after an incubation period of about 2-3 weeks in dogs (3-6 weeks in humans), the victim would then invariably show symptoms like painful spasms, excessive salivation and eventually death. While this disease has no cure, rabies can be greatly prevented through regular vaccination.
