The Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center (PhilRootcrops) is a government research, development and training institution for root crops, which include cassava, sweetpotato, taro, yam, yambean, arrowroot and other root crops. Previously known as PRCRTC, it was established on March 21, 1977 through Presidential Decree 1107 and is based at the Visayas State University (VSU), Visca, Baybay City, the zonal agricultural university of Visayas. PhilRootcrops is the lead agency of the National Rootcrop RDE Network which is a group of institutions responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating research and development/extension programs in support to the rootcrop industry. |

The Draft Philippine National Standard for Sweet Cassava was presented in a public consultation at Balai ni Gloria at Solano, Nueva Vizcaya on August 16, 2012. Present during the activity were representatives from Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, State Universities and Colleges, Local Government Offices, farmers and businessmen from Region 2. |

The Visayas State University celebrated another milestone in its history as it celebrated the 88th Founding Anniversary from August 2-11, 2012. The more than one-week celebration had different lined-up festive, joyous and informative activities for the students, staff, personnel, clienteles and visitors. One such activity is the Booth Exhibit Contest which opened on August 8 and culminated on August 10 during the Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ Day.

Data, a Postharvest Expert, was invited by the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division of the Department of Agriculture Region 7 under the baton of the Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Gerry Avila, as resource person in the Training on Postharvest Packaging, Labelling and Handling Strategy.

The Department of Agriculture through then Secretary Arthur C. Yap issued Administrative Order No. 16 and 17 which is the General Guidelines for Plant Material Certification for Cassava and Cassava Nursery Accreditation, respectively. This AO was issued in order to ensure production and distribution of good quality cassava planting materials. Presently, there is a nationwide threat on pests and diseases that may possibly affect the cassava industry in the country. |
