The Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a non-government organization, and VSU through the VSU Foundation for Agricultural and Rural Development entered into an agreement to train the typhoon victims in Tanauan, Leyte on sweet potato processing.

Some 30 women, and two men participated in the training which commenced on May 18, at the VSU Department of Food Science and Technology (DFST). The participants were identified by CRS as those that have signified interest in processing.

DFST Head Dr. Lorina A. Galvez said the participants will be trained from processing, to packaging, sensory evaluation of food products, and marketing. Prior to the training proper, the participants have indicated that they want to learn the procedures in processing, techniques in packaging, as well as maintaining proper hygiene and sanitation during processing.

The participants will be trained in processing chips, catsup, jam, beverages, and noodles from sweet potato.

Funded by CRS, the training is organized by DFST which will also be responsible in monitoring the processing area and procedures in Tanauan after the training.
