VSU alumna is outstanding PhD student at Arkansas uni

VSU alumna Reiofeli Salas recently earned the Outstanding PhD Student award from the Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS). Salas is one of the 11 graduate students of the University of Arkansas (U of A) who were recognized during the 16th Annual Meeting of the SWSS/Weed Science Society of America in San Juan, Puerto Rico, February 8-11.

Salas also received third prize for her poster presentation on RNA-Seq transcriptome analysis for glufosinate tolerance in Palmer amaranth. Salas’s study sought to find out the non-target site-based tolerance mechanisms of Palmer amaranth to glufosinate herbicide.

Salas’s research, which is supervised by U of A professor Nilda Burgos and extension weed scientist Robert Scott, serves as a contribution to ease the plight of cotton and soybean farmers in Southern United States.  

A Bachelor of Science magna cum laude graduate in Agricultural Chemistry at VSU, Salas is now pursuing her doctorate studies at the U of A Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, where she works on crop, soil, and environmental sciences.
