Agriculutral Extension about program

About the Program

The Department of Agricultural Education and Extension of the then Visayas State College of Agriculture offered BSAgEd program which was revised to BSADE with majors in Agricultural Education, Agricultural Extension and Development Communication and later revised to split the curriculum into three degree programs, namely: Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education, Bachelor of Science in Development Communication, and Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Development with major in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology.

The umbrella department that offers Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Education and Agricultural Extension is the Department of Agricultural Education and Extension. The Department of Community Development Education (DCDE) was created after ViSCA was converted into Leyte State University on August 10, 2001. Thereafter, course offering of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Development major in Agricultural Extension was automatically under this department. Later BS Development Education major in Agricultural Extension was solely offered in the department after the BS in Development Communication had its separate program.

Just recently in 2017, the BS Agriculture program integrated Agricultural Extension as one of its major fields. The BS in Agriculture major in Agricultural Extension trains a cadre of future professionals who will play a very important role in agricultural and rural development – extension agents. Extension agents serve a vital function of bringing research-generated technologies and innovations to farmers and also as channels so that wisdom from farmers can be understood by researchers so that researches become relevant to farmers’ real needs. Without extension, research-generated technologies and innovation will go to waste.

Program highlights

  • The major is designed for students who want a general background in agriculture with technical and professional competencies in planning, implementing and evaluating agricultural extension and rural development programs; developing and conducting extension cum research projects; facilitating trainings and seminars; promoting agricultural technologies and applying participatory approaches in organizing farmers’ associations as well as in planning, and administering of extension programs.
  • Acting as the link between researchers and farmers, extension agents may possess adequate knowledge and skills in agricultural production. Agricultural Extension majors must take up courses in crop production, animal husbandry, soil management and other areas necessary for a successful farm enterprise. They too are trained to do social research so that they can better understand the farmers, their needs, circumstances and aspirations, and give feedback to researchers.
  • Agricultural Extension majors undertake specific courses on research: AgEx 197 (Methods of Agricultural Research) and AgEx 122 (Technical Writing and Manuscript Preparation). What differentiates AgEx majors from others is their training on extension program/project management and their exposure to the social dimensions of development.
  • AgEx graduates as extension agents or community organizers of government organizations, non-government organizations, private firms and even become managers of big farms. Some alumni are now occupying key positions in government line agencies in the region.
