It is a great feat of the VSU participants from the Integrated High School (VSUIHS) as all four of them were conferred with best oral presentation awards at the 11th International Conference for Science Educators and Teachers (ISET) 2024.
Out of 121 delegates from different universities in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, VSUIHS Principal Dr. Shalom Grace S. Vega, Dr. Nancy D. Abunda, Dr. Christy M. Desades, and Dr. Leo A. Mamolo successfully presented their research papers and were chosen as recipients of the outstanding presentation awards.
ISET 2024 is jointly organized by the Science Education Association of Thailand (SEAT) with 12 Thai universities, one Indonesian state university, and one from the Philippines.
The conference provides a platform for overseas and local science educators, Thai science teachers, and graduate science education students to share science education research and practices and establish networks with other science educators and teachers.
“The two-day participation in the conference served as a venue to gain and share valuable experiences and knowledge in different educational fields. Also, it was an opportunity to listen, observe, and benchmark the priceless trends and expertise in math and science education from distinguished keynote speakers from around the world,” shared Dr. Vega.
During the conference, Dr. Vega presented her paper, “Trends in Chemistry Education Research on Student Transformation in the Philippines: A Meta-analytic Review” which aims to determine the current research trends in chemistry education.
“It examines the effect of chemistry education research findings included in the meta-analysis on using varied teaching methodologies on student transformation outcomes,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mamolo expressed how proud he was to represent VSU on the international stage as he discussed his paper on “Effects of Digital Interactive Math Comics (DIMaC) to Students’ Mathematics Achievement, Motivation, Self Efficacy, and Anxiety in the ‘New Normal’.”
On top of receiving the awards, the VSU delegates also initiated a possible linkage between VSU and SEAT for future research and extension collaborations.
“The experience was fulfilling. The conference has enabled me to share my research study with an international audience and allowed me to be exposed to different relevant research studies. Moreover, it allowed me to be acquainted with the science education community and have the chance to initiate linkages among science educators and teachers not just from the Philippines but also from Thailand and Indonesia,” Dr. Vega concluded.
This year’s ISET is themed, “Science Education in 2030 Need for New Solutions in A Rapid Changing World: Rethinking our Future Together”. The conference ran from June 13 to 14, 2024, at Montatip Hall, Udon Thani, Thailand.
