The year 2025 marks another milestone for the Visayas State University (VSU) academic community as one of its homegrown chemists lands among the Top 10 performing examinees in the October 2025 Chemists Computer-Based Licensure Examination (CLE).
Mr. Michael John G. Bation, a #ProudViscan graduate of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry (DoPAC) under the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (FNMS), clinched 8th place nationwide with a rating of 92.15%.
This year’s board examination was topped by Mr. Crisandro Allen Lazo of the University of the Philippines Manila who garnered a rating of 94.35%, followed by other topnotchers from UP Diliman, De La Salle University–Manila, the University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, and Negros Oriental State University–Dumaguete.
VSU also takes pride in its newly licensed Chemists and Chemical Technicians, who contributed to an impressive first-timer passing rate of 80% (overall 68.2%) for the CLE and a remarkable 97.01% overall passing rate for the Chemical Technician Licensure Examination (CTLE).
These figures once again surpass national averages, reflecting the continued academic strength and rigorous preparation of VSU’s chemistry program.
DoPAC Head Dr. Elizabeth S. Quevedo expressed her joy over this latest success, noting that the department’s consistent improvements in instruction, mentorship, and laboratory training are paying off.
For Mr. Bation, his success was not a mere product of diligence but a profound journey of faith and grace.
“Looking back, I can honestly say this achievement was not just the result of hard work—it was a story of God’s grace,” he said. “Preparing for the Chemist Licensure Exam was one of the most humbling journeys of my life. It was not only about mastering chemistry concepts or solving problems, but it was also about surrendering everything to God and trusting His plan, even when I couldn’t see the path forward.”
He divulged that the months leading to the examination tested not only his intellect but also his endurance and faith.
During the interview, he recounted the many sacrifices he had to make while balancing self-care, focus, and perseverance.
“Naa ju’y times nga kinahanglan ko mamili between magpahuway ug magpadayon, between self-care and sacrifice, especially kadtong hapit na mahuman ang review ug exam. Pero nakapadayon ra gihapon ko tungod sa Ginoo. I believe He sent people to lift me up–akong mga ginikanan ug mga igsuon nga wala ju’y hunong sa pag-pray ug pag-support naku. Thankful sad ko sa akong mga friends sa ilang pag-remind naku to breathe and take breaks. Also, I am grateful to my mentors who believed in me even when I doubted myself. Their love and support were reflections of His grace.”
[There were times when I had to choose between rest and pushing through, between self-care and sacrifice, especially on the last leg of the review phase and exam proper. But through it all, God was my strength. He sent people to lift me up—my parents, Joel and Michele Bation, and my siblings who never stopped praying for me and supporting me, as well as my friends who reminded me to breathe and take breaks, and my mentors who believed in me even when I doubted myself. Their love and support were reflections of His grace.]
When asked what message he could impart to aspiring chemists and future board exam takers, Mr. Bation emphasized the value of faith, perseverance, and humility.
He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the faculty and staff of DoPAC, acknowledging their role in his growth as a scholar and as a person.
“To the faculty and staff of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, special mention to our department head, Mr. Mark Ryan Tripole, and to my thesis adviser, Dr. Elizabeth S. Quevedo—thank you for being instruments of learning, growth, and grace. Your dedication, wisdom, and patience have shaped us not just as chemists, but as people. My years in VSU truly helped shape the future I am going to take. VSU planted seeds that will bear fruit for the years to come.”
Finally, Mr. Bation extended his congratulations to all new passers of the CLE and CTLE, dedicating the achievement to his faith.
