After coveting the championship title last year, VSU physically and mentally prepared 424 Viscan delegates for the biggest and most-awaited regional collegiate sporting event—the 38th Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA-8) Games in Eastern Visayas.
The university organized a one-day special orientation program to support and guide all the athletes, coaches, and trainers for the SCUAA Games, which will be held at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) in Calbayog City, Samar, from December 8 to 13, 2024.
The orientation focused on equipping participants with the SCUAA guidelines, safety protocols, and the significance of representing VSU. Prof. Vicente B. Antipaso delivered a talk on building mental toughness in sports competitions, while Dr. Merry Christ’l T. Guinocor provided essential insights on health and safety protocols. Also, Krisha Andrea V. Colis shared practical advice on preventing, managing, and treating sports injuries.
The program is designed to “recognize and support athletes representing the university in the upcoming SCUAA Games 2024. This activity aims to inspire and prepare athletes, coaches, and staff by equipping them with knowledge about the event guidelines, safety protocols, and conduct expectations. Additionally, this event promotes a sense of camaraderie and pride, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to holistic development and sportsmanship.”
VSU President Prose Ivy G. Yepes explained to the VSU Pythons—the university’s official sports team—that it is not the game that goes beyond the scoreboard but about representing the values of a Viscan.
“As part of the VSU family, your journey aligns with the STRIDES framework, which serves as our guide toward achieving excellence and societal transformation. Sports, as a unifying and empowering field, embodies the very essence of this framework,” VSU Pres. Yepes said. “It is through your Service to the community, your Truthfulness in honoring the game, your Resilience in overcoming challenges, and your Discipline in preparation and competition that you reflect the core values we hold dear. These games are an opportunity for you to display Excellence, Social Justice, and a spirit of inclusivity that will leave a lasting mark.”
Aside from the technical aspects, the orientation also emphasized the importance of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship to student-athletes.
VSU delegates comprise 334 athletes, 62 coaches and assistant coaches, 8 faculty and staff from the Institute of Human Kinetics, 10 working committees, and 10 university officials.
