Good news for students who dream of building businesses, creating new ideas, and becoming future leaders!
The Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BS Entrepreneurship) program of Visayas State University Main Campus is now ready to accept its first batch of students for the first semester of Academic Year 2026-2027.
This achievement came after VSU received the Report on the Result of Preliminary Assessment (RRPA) from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office VIII which confirms that the university successfully passed the important requirements needed to offer the new degree program.
The said document was formally received by Instructor Gracielle Dawn G. Lao, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (DEI) and Dr. Pauline Caintic, DEI faculty member, from CHED Regional Director Dr. Maximo Aljibe at the CHED Regional Field Office VIII in Tacloban City.
The BS Entrepreneurship program is expected to provide incoming students with practical learning experiences, entrepreneurial skills, creativity, innovation, and confidence in building businesses that can help improve lives and communities.
New Program, New Opportunities for Viscans
Instructor Lao related that the opening of this program is a very important step for the university.
“We are really very happy that we are now offering BS in Entrepreneurship because there is now a department or a program that will be focused on entrepreneurship and innovation,” she said.
She explained that the program aims to create more innovation-driven activities and build an entrepreneurial ecosystem inside VSU similar to those developed by leading universities that offer the same program such as the University of San Carlos.
What makes this program exciting is that it has a strong focus on real business experience. Unlike other programs that focus on conducting thesis or case studies, this program will let students experience building and operating their own enterprise before graduation.
“Students will create their own business as part of their graduation requirements. Their enterprise should also be registered following the actual process of starting and building a business here in the Philippines,” she said.
This approach will provide students real-life experiences while studying. They will learn how to talk to customers, solve problems, manage operations, and make important business decisions, making them more confident and prepared for the real world outside the university.
The program will offer three tracks that students can choose from based on their interests. These include Food Technology, Tourism Business, and Hospitality, allowing students to explore industries with growing opportunities in the country.
Students will also have opportunities for field trips, business visits, and hands-on activities where they can learn directly from actual entrepreneurs and actual business establishments.
VSU’s role in preparing students for real success
As one of the leading academic institutions in the country, VSU ensures to provide quality education to its students.
In terms of this program, the university offers good facilities, experienced faculty members, a Technology Business Incubator (TBI), and support for innovation and intellectual property development.
According to Instructor Lao, these resources and opportunities make the program different from other institutions.
“I think VSU itself and the ecosystem that the university can offer make this program very special among others. Although the approval of this program also faced challenges, the university worked hard to make it possible,” she said.
For incoming Viscans who are considering taking the program, Instructor Lao has this to say: “Start your journey and then let your journey speak for you. If you enroll in this program, you will become a changemaker in society.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Mark C. Ratilla, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics, expressed his excitement after many years of preparation for the program.
“As the main proponent of this program in 2018, finally this program has already received the RRPA from CHED. After many years of working for this, despite the challenges we faced, I am excited to welcome students to enroll in this program next semester,” Dr. Ratilla said.
The BS Entrepreneurship program will accept only 40 students for the Academic Year 2026-2027, making it one of the newest and most exciting programs at VSU.
