In a major boost to its academic infrastructure and operational resilience, the Visayas State University (VSU) received two newly completed facilities from the Department of Public Works and Highways-Regional Office VIII (DPWH-RO VIII) in a formal turn-over ceremony on June 4, 2026 at the OP Board Room, VSU Main Campus.
This ceremony included the formal commissioning of a new state of the art Vertebrate Anatomy Laboratory and Morgue beside the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) and an upgraded University Power Generator installed on the lower campus.
Both projects were under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA 2024) with implementation by DPWH-RO VIII.
Improved lab teaching and biological research facility
The recently constructed Vertebrate Anatomy Laboratory and Morgue will operate under the supervision of the Department of Biological Sciences.
The facility is pegged at Php. 5,600,000.00 and is expected to enhance the hands-on training and instruction capacity of the university, especially in its veterinary medicine and life sciences programs.
The construction period of the laboratory began on January 13, 2025 and ran for 160 calendar days.
The DPWH achieved its goals and finished the modern standalone facility on time.
The facility offers students and faculty members a structured, secured, and specialized space for anatomical dissections, biological research, and lab teaching.
Boosting research and operational resilience
In addition to the academic laboratory, DPWH-VIII also handed over the completed project entitled "Replacement of the University Power Generator.”
The infrastructure project amounted to a total of Php 8,000,000.00, from an original contract amount of Php 7,948,600.00, an upgrade aimed at providing a more stable and robust power supply for the VSU Main Campus.
The project was implemented from January to August 2025 and involved a new powerhouse to safeguard and support improved power generation facilities.
Essential to the university's high demand for teaching, research, and extension, a stable power supply supports the continued development of the institution and aids in periods of power outage to ensure normal operations on campus remain unaffected.
A shared vision of development
These projects are one of many major infrastructure projects that reflect the strong collaboration between VSU and other national government agencies in creating high-quality and environmentally friendly learning environments.
VSU continues to build on its mandate as a premier research university in the region with the construction of high-capacity facilities.
