In light of recent global trends, the University Health Services would like to remind all students, faculty and staff to take preventive measures against both Mpox (Monkeypox) and COVID-19 to help protect everyone in our community. With both viruses continuing to circulate in communities worldwide, awareness and early action are key to keeping our campus safe and healthy.

As of May 26, there has been a notable spike of Mpox cases in various regions of Mindanao, with more than a dozen cases documented this month. Furthermore, several Southeast Asian countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore, have reported a surge in COVID-19 cases. While no case has been reported in our vicinity, we urge everyone to remain vigilant and follow standard protocols, especially if symptoms appear.

In addition, this summer season, we also see a rise in seasonal illnesses such as heat-related conditions (heat exhaustion, heat stroke), sore eyes, measles, as well as respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Warmer temperatures can reach dangerous levels, creating an environment in which pathogens thrive and spread more easily. While these health concerns are often underestimated, they can lead to significant discomfort and complications if not treated. It’s important to take preventive steps early on.

UHS would like to advise everyone of the following in order to prevent the spread of diseases:

  1. Practice good hygiene

Hand hygiene is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infections. An alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) is the preferred method of hand hygiene, unless hands are visibly soiled, then plain soap and water is recommended.

  2. Avoid contact
Do not touch the rash or sores of a person with symptoms. Avoid contact with contaminated materials and surfaces and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves and masks.

  3. Isolate if sick and seek medical attention
Isolate yourself from others and seek medical advice to the nearest healthcare facility promptly and follow the recommended protocols to prevent potential spread.

The health and safety of the VSU community is our top priority. The university’s Public Health Unit will continue to release information campaigns and advisories to keep everyone informed and prepared for a safe and healthy summer.
