The Visayas State University-Department of Biological Sciences (VSU-DBS) continues to build on its growing work in marine biology, joining the 18th Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS) National Symposium held from July 10 to 12, 2025, at the University of the Philippines Cebu.
With over 600 participants from across the country, this year’s gathering brought together marine scientists, educators, students, policymakers, and environmental advocates to tackle pressing issues in ocean sustainability.
The symposium theme, “Oceans at a Crossroad: Integrating Science, Policy, and Action for Sustainable Philippine Seas,” anchored three days of discussions, with nearly 300 oral and 100 poster presentations delivered across sessions.
Representing VSU were Dr. Donna Guarte-Valida and BS Marine Biology student Jose Enrique E. Reyes, who presented their recent study titled “Ichthyoplankton Distribution in Cuatro Islas Protected Landscape and Seascape (CIPLS).”
Their research focused on the distribution and density of fish larvae across seasons and locations within the protected area, a study that holds practical value for the sustainable management of local fisheries.
Their findings showed that fish larvae are more abundant during the Amihan season, particularly in the eastern section of CIPLS. More importantly, areas designated as strict protection zones showed higher diversity and density of ichthyoplankton, confirming the importance of no-take areas as nurseries for ecologically and commercially important fish such as mackerels, sardines, scads, barracudas, and jacks.
The study contributes to a better understanding of the early life stages of fish and affirms the role of marine protected areas as effective spawning grounds. It also offers local policymakers a scientific basis for refining conservation zoning and enforcement in CIPLS.
Aside from presenting their work, Dr. Guarte-Valida also served as a session chair and judge in the Marine Biodiversity category, and was elected as the new Vice President for the Visayas region of PAMS for its 19th cycle.
The participation of VSU-DBS in this national symposium is part of its wider efforts to advance coastal research in Eastern Visayas.
