In recognition of the cross-cutting role of social science in agricultural RDE, the Institute of Strategic Research and Development Studies (ISRDS) takes on an orchestrating part in stirring critical thinking across disciplines and commodities by mapping out urgent issues and problems that require timely and appropriate responses. Specifically, it focuses on the complex RDE issues of rural poverty and the impacts of local governance, human capital development, energy and water to achieve sustainable agricultural progress in rural communities. In addition to its primary functions in research and extension, the ISRDS is expanding its mandate since June 2004, to offer degree courses thereby influencing young minds towards positive transformation in agriculture through quality higher education.

Department of Economics

The Department of Economics began in 1975 as part of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness (DAEA). In 2001, the Visayas State College of Agriculture (VISCA) was transformed into Leyte State University (LSU), leading to the separation of the two components of DAEA and the establishment of the Department of Economics (DOE). In 2006, the DOE offered its first Bachelor of Science in Economics program under Region VIII.
In 2010, the College of Management and Economics (CME) was established, and the DOE was transferred from the College of Agriculture to CME. The department continued to strengthen its academic programs, and in 2017, it began developing a more robust BS Economics curriculum in accordance with CHED policies. By 2020, the department was preparing for AACCUP Level III accreditation, and in 2021, the BS Economics program received its Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC).
The department further expanded its academic offerings with the BS Agriculture major in Agricultural Economics program receiving COPC in 2023, followed by the MS Agricultural Economics program in 2024. In 2026, the department achieved another milestone with the MS Applied Economics program receiving its COPC.
Today, the Department of Economics continues to grow and innovate, committed to producing competent economists and professionals who contribute meaningfully to society.
