About the Program

Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics (BSAP) is one of the newest program offerings of the Visayas State University. Physics is a foundation for virtually all technologies. Our technologically-based society must have an adequate supply of workers who understand and know how to use their knowledge of physics.

To encourage the study of applications-based physics by a broader range of students, the Department of Mathematics and Physics (DMP) is offering the Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics. The BS Applied Physics program serves as a transition from the more foundational fields of physics to the applied problems in the industry. It will give physics majors the knowledge, skills, and experiences in great demand in the high-tech industry.

Program highlights

  • The program will provide students with comprehensive and rigorous training in physics as a foundation for careers in pure and applied physics or interdisciplinary sciences.
  • The coursework for the program includes a total of 36 units for the General Education courses, 14 units for the Non-Technical courses (Physical Education and National Service Training Program).
  • Technical courses include courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics.
  • The program requires both:
    • an off-campus internship in an industry or science/engineering center or government research facilities and
    • an undergraduate thesis.
  • Specializations offered are Instrumentation, Computational/Environmental, Med-bio Physics, and Theoretical/Materials Physics.
  • Applicants seeking admission to the program must comply with the requirements and policies set by the Visayas State University Registrar.

Career Opportunities

The program would be sufficient to enable the students to pursue areas in advanced physics research, university physics teaching, graduate studies and employment in physics-related jobs in business, industry or the government. More specifically, the following is a list of employment opportunities:

  • Applied physics provides excellent preparation for, and is a traditional pathway to, graduate programs in physics-related areas, including the applied physics areas of condensed matter, plasma, optical physics, biophysics, and areas such as high energy physics and astrophysics.
  • Applied physics is a great vehicle for entry into many graduate-level programs in engineering fields, with a background as compelling for these graduate programs as are bachelor's degrees in engineering.
  • Applied physics provides superb preparation for a wide range of opportunities in university, government, and industrial organizations because the applied physics curriculum is highly customizable, with elective chains possible in diverse applications of the student's choice.
  • Applied physics is perhaps the best preparation for careers in general technology areas and is ideal for up-and-coming areas, such as energy and nanotechnology.
  • Applied physics is very well suited for any career requiring strong experimental and/or theoretical and/or calculation skills.
  • Applied physics is a strategic major for pre-med, pre-dental, pre-teaching, and other pre-professional students because it provides a strong background in core areas, combined with great flexibility in the choice of electives.
  • Applied physics is an ideal background for careers in patent law.
  • Applied physics offers a seamless way to enter Master's programs and then start careers in the highly-recruited area of medical physics.
  • Applied physics is excellent preparation for careers at the interfaces of biology, medicine, and physics.
  • Applied physics provides a very desirable pathway to careers in finance.
