ddc award

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through its chairperson, Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, has awarded the Visayas State University's (VSU) Department of Development Communication (DDC) of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) as the country's Center of Development (COD) in Development Communication.

Dr. Editha G. Cagasan, the erstwhile head of DDC, and Ms. Delia L. Silao, head of VSU Manila Office who represented VSU President Jose L. Bacusmo, received the Plaque of Recognition on June 4, 2013 at the CHED Auditorium in C. P. Garcia Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City.

Assisting CHED Chairperson Licuanan in giving the awards were Dr. Ma. Cynthia Rose B. Bautista, CHED Commissioner; Dr. Sinforoso M. Birung, Director IV of CHED's Office of Programs and Standards; and Dr. Ramon R. Tuazon, Chairperson of CHED's Technical Committee for Communication.

The award cited VSU-DDC "for demonstrating the potential to excel in providing quality instruction, research, extension and linkages and institutional qualifications." The VSU-DDC's COD status shall be valid from the date of the approval of the Commission en banc until May 31, 2014.

Attached to the award as COD in Development Communication is a financial assistance worth Php1,500,000 from CHED. This will be given on a project proposal basis geared towards the improvement of the degree program. As stated in the guideline, implementation of the project should conform to the policies stipulated in CMO No. 19 s. 2012 (Implementing Guidelines for the Identification, Support and Development of COEs and CODs for the Communication and Development Communication Programs).

It can be recalled that there are 41 awardees for humanities, social sciences and communication. However, there are only three awards for communication – the University of the Philippines Diliman's Department of Communication Research of the College of Mass Communication (Center of Excellence in Communication), the University of the Philippines Los Baños' College of Development Communication (Center of Excellence in Development Communication), and the Visayas State University's Department of Development Communication (Center of Development in Development Communication).
