Team CS Code from the Department of Computer Science and Technology (DCST) of Visayas State University-Main Campus earned second place at the Byte Forward Hackathon-Visayas Leg, a regional tech competition that brought together the brightest student coders across the islands.
The event was part of the 34th Visayas Area Business Conference (VABC), held last July 24–25 at the Leyte Convention Center in Palo, Leyte.
The team’s victory marks their entry to the national championship round of the Byte Forward Hackathon, set to take place during the 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo this October at SMX Manila.
Composed of Yñigo Niño C. Ramas, Xyryll Jay A. Taneo, John Andrei B. Kahano, and Pete Alexander N. Piangco, and mentored by Mr. Jomari Joseph Barrera, Team CS Code impressed the judges with their innovative solution that demonstrated practical digital thinking rooted in real-world problems.
Another VSU team, Viscan++, made it to the final round and also earned praise for their performance. Members included Jamir Oasis M. Andrade, Jade Abadiano Jaballa, John Rhuel Laurente, and Josh Sosmeña.
The hackathon is part of a bigger shift pushing the Visayas region toward digital transformation. Anchored on the theme “Visayas Rising: Accelerating Business Growth through Digital Transformation,” the Byte Forward Hackathon was a prelude to one of the country's biggest business events, gathering students, educators, entrepreneurs, and policy makers in one space.
VSU’s performance at Byte Forward shows that the university’s push for innovation is gaining ground. While Team CS Code took home trophies and cash, the real reward lies in what comes next.
