#ProudViscans: VSU profs and alumni dominate in regional health research confab

Viscans dominated this year’s Regional Health Research Symposium (RHRS) organized by the Eastern Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (EVHRDC).
Dr. Janet Alexis A. De Los Santos, Dr. Leodoro J. Labrague, Dr. Lilibeth G. Miralles, Roque Merrick A. Dacullo, Prof. Jayzon G. Bitacura, and Jason D. Braga won the top awards during this virtual regional conference held on October 29-30, 2020.
Dr. Janet Alexis A. De Los Santos, College of Nursing (CoN) faculty, and her collaborator Dr. Leodoro J. Labrague of Sultan Qaboos University, Oman both won 1st place in the oral presentation under the professional category with their research entitled, “Fear of COVID-19 and Turnover Intentions of Frontline Nurses in the Community: A Cross-Sectional Study in the Philippines”.
In addition, Dr. Lilibeth G. Miralles, a faculty member of VSU Alangalang, was also selected as 3rd placer in the same category with her research on “Community Risk Factors on the Occurrence and Prevention of Diarrhea Outbreak in Eastern Visayas: A Case-Control Study”.
Under the student category, Mr. Roque Merrick A. Dacullo, a Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSBio) graduate, bagged the top prize in the poster exhibit for his research on “Antibacterial, Anticoagulant, and Antioxidant Screening of Blue Ternate (Clitoria ternatea L.) Flower Aqueous Extracts”. Prof. Jayzon G. Bitacura of the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) shares the award with Mr. Dacullo being his thesis adviser.
Lastly, Mr. Jason D. Braga, a graduate of both bachelor's and master’s program in Food Technology, was accorded 2nd Place in the poster exhibit under the professional category. His research was about “Frying Cycle Affects Chemical Qualities, Histopathology, and LD50 Establishment of Used Coconut Oil in Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) Vacuum Frying”. Braga was joined by Dr. Roberta D. Lauzon, Dr. Lorina A. Galvez, and Dr. Tomas J. Fernandez in the study under the ACIAR project.
The conduct of this annual research symposium is one of the core mandates of EVHRDC to pursue the promotion of health research initiatives here in Eastern Visayas. This year’s conference theme was anchored on “Research and Innovation for Accessible, Equitable, and High-Quality Health Solutions amidst Global Health Crisis”.
