The young and energetic Governor of the Province of Leyte, Honorable Carlos Jericho L. Petilla, will be the guest of honor and speaker during the 59th VSU Commencement Exercises in the morning of April 11, 2012 at the VSU Gymnatorium.

 

The brilliant governor will be speaking before some 800 graduating students who will be marching with their respective graduate and undergraduate degrees together with those with non-degree programs of the University. Gov. Petilla will not only inspire the graduating students but as well as their parents, guardians, guests, the faculty, staff and students of VSU.
Governor Petilla is a very generous supporter of the different programs of the University. He has been very instrumental in constructing the Olympic-size New VSU Oval located at the Upper Campus of the University. Moreover, he continuously sponsors the Gov. Carlos Jericho L. Petilla Award for Most Outstanding Student in which the graduating students who do well in their academics and co-curricular activities with leadership potentials in the undergraduate level compete in the prestigious award.

The amiable governor is now serving his third and last consecutive term as provincial governor of Leyte. Gov. Petilla joined politics in 2004 when he was elected governor of Leyte. Presently, he also serves two key positions in the regional councils in Region 8: as chairman of the Regional Development Council (RDC), the primary institution in the region which sets the direction of economic and social development of the region and through which regional development efforts are coordinated; and as head of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC), a body that formulates plans and recommends such measures that will improve or enhance the peace and order and public safety in the region.

Because of his exemplary leadership, he has been a recipient of various awards such as the Hall of Fame Award from the Philippine Hospital Association specifically the Presidential Award for his outstanding leadership in providing quality health service to his constituents from 2006 to 2010, and Hall of Fame Award for the Most Business-Friendly LGU for 2008-2011 as awarded by the Philippine Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

Gov. Petilla is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering (Honors Program) degree at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he also had his high school. He is a son of the former Governor of Leyte Leopoldo E. Petilla of Palo and former Leyte Governor and Leyte 1st District Representative Remedios L. Petilla of Baybay, Leyte.

Gov. Petilla is married to Frances Ann Regis Basilio of Cebu City with whom he has five children—Carlos Anthony, Nicola Marie, Jose Lorenzo, Frances Mikayla and Danika Pilar.
