President’s Notes | Pasidungog 2026

Delivered during Pasidungog 2026: A Tribute to the Graduands with Latin Honors on July 21, 2026 at the VSU Gymnatorium 

To our distinguished Vice Presidents, members of the faculty and staff, proud parents, guardians and families, honored guests, and most especially, to our 360 graduating students who have earned Latin Honors and high distinction, good morning.

Earlier today, your names were called one by one. You walked across this stage, received your medal, smiled for a photograph, and heard the applause of the people who waited for this moment almost as eagerly as you have.

But allow me to ask you a question: When today's applause has faded, what will remain? Will it be the medal around your neck? Or will it be the kind of person you choose to become after you leave this university?

Today, we celebrate your academic distinction. There is no question that you have earned it. Yet every medal conferred this morning tells a story that cannot be found on a transcript.

It tells of mornings when getting out of bed felt difficult, but you attended classes anyway (that’s sacrifice). It tells of evenings spent studying while others were already asleep (that’s courage). It tells of disappointments that taught you resilience and mistakes that made you wiser (that’s discipline) , and moments when you questioned yourself but decided to move forward anyway (that’s hope).

Some of you traveled long distances just to attend your classes. Some balanced school with work. Some carried family responsibilities while trying to meet deadlines. Others faced financial difficulties or personal struggles that few people ever knew about.

Your classmates may have seen your grades. Your parents saw everything else.

They saw the sacrifices that often went unnoticed. They worried when you were exhausted. They celebrated your smallest victories. They believed in you even during moments when you struggled to believe in yourself.

To our parents, guardians, and families, this recognition belongs to you as well. Thank you for every sacrifice made out of love, every word of encouragement, every prayer whispered in hope, and every hand extended when these young men and women needed someone to lean on.

Before you became awardees, you first became sons, daughters, siblings, and friends who chose to keep moving forward despite life's uncertainties.

That is why today's recognition speaks not only of academic ability, but also of character. Character is formed in the choices we make when no one is watching.

It is choosing honesty over convenience.

Respect over arrogance.

Discipline over excuses.

Compassion over indifference.

These are choices no examination can measure, yet they define the kind of person the world will remember.

Today, people recognize you because of your Latin honors.

Years from now, people may no longer remember whether you graduated Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Summa Cum Laude.

But they will remember something else. Were you trustworthy? Did you keep your word? Did you treat people with dignity, regardless of their station in life? Did you use your knowledge to solve problems, or simply to advance yourself? When you had the opportunity to choose between what was easy and what was right, which path did you take?

These are questions that no diploma can answer. Only your life can.

Here at Visayas State University, we often speak about becoming a global green university. We pursue excellence in teaching, research, innovation, extension, and internationalization. 

As we advance our SUSTAIN Agenda, grounded in our aspiration to become a global green university, we believe that education is not simply about producing successful professionals. It is about forming ethical leaders, innovative thinkers, responsible citizens, and sustainability champions who use knowledge to improve lives and protect our common future.

Yet none of these aspirations can be realized by infrastructure, technologies, publications, or rankings alone.

They depend on people. They depend on graduates whose decisions are guided by integrity, whose work reflects competence, whose respect for nature is matched by respect for humanity, and whose achievements are measured not only by personal success but also by the lives they improve.

Whether you become a scientist, engineer, educator, entrepreneur, artist, public servant, health professional, or farmer, remember that every profession offers opportunities to leave the world better than you found it.

The knowledge you gained at Visayas State University was never meant to remain inside classrooms or laboratories. It finds its fullest meaning when it helps a farmer harvest more from the land, when it improves the life of a family, when it protects our forests and seas, when it inspires a child to dream, when it strengthens a community, or when it gives hope to someone who had almost given up.

That is the kind of excellence we hope you will carry with you.

Not excellence that seeks applause, but excellence that earns trust.

As graduates of Visayas State University, you now become ambassadors of this institution. Wherever life takes you, people will form their impression of this University through the way you live, the way you work, and the way you treat others.

Carry our values with humility. Serve with compassion. Speak the truth. Stand resilient. Live with integrity. Practice discipline. Pursue excellence. Champion social justice.

Let integrity guide your decisions. Let innovation help you respond to changing times with creativity and wisdom. Let service remind you that knowledge reaches its fullest meaning when it uplifts others. And let environmental stewardship shape the way you care for the world that future generations will inherit.

Before I end, allow me to ask you one final question.

When you return to this campus ten or twenty years from now, what do you hope people will say about you? 

Allow me to leave you with the words of Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma, former Executive Director of the Philippine Genome Center: "Science thrives on curiosity, openness, and the courage to ask difficult questions."

Although spoken in the context of science, those words speak to every field of learning. Never lose your curiosity. Remain open to new ideas. Have the courage to ask difficult questions, and the courage to act with integrity when the answers ask something of you.

To all our 360 honorees, my warmest congratulations! Wear your medals with gratitude. Wear your achievements with humility. But above all, carry with you the character that earned these honors.

One day, today's medals may rest inside a drawer. The applause you heard this morning will become a distant memory.

May the character that brought you here never fade. That will always be the finest honor you can wear.

Congratulations, Class of 2026. May God bless you always. Thank you, and good morning.
