Engr. Andy Phil D. Cortes, an instructor at VSU’s Department of Civil Engineering, is among the University of the Philippines Diliman distinguished graduate students during the school's annual Parangal sa Mag-aaral.

Cortes received the honor on February 26, 2020, as one of UPD’s outstanding students for the First Semester of Academic Year 2019-2020.

The Parangal sa Mag-aaral is a tribute to both graduate and undergraduate students of the university whose General Weighted Average (GWA) is at least 1.25.

Asked how he was able to achieve this feat, Cortes answered he was simply being passionate.

“I have no secret technique in studying...I think I don't even study harder than I ought to. Maybe I study with curiosity in mind, not grades. Sometimes I even have low scores in exams, but the profs appreciated my commitment to learning with the other submissions like in projects and assignments. Grade is just a number, but learning is forever,” he said.

“I am so grateful to VSU for supporting my studies,” he added, also thanking his family and church.

”For the VSU students and community—Padayon! Continue the search for truth,” he ended.

Engr. Cortes is currently on study leave, taking up Master of Science in Civil Engineering Major in Structural Engineering. In 2015, he finished his BS in Civil Engineering degree cum laude at Visayas State University.
