The Institute of Tropical Ecology was approved by the ViSCA Board of Trustees in May 1998 to undertake and promote ecological education, research and extension in the Visayas. It is task to sustain and continue the ecological and environmental research and development activities of the university.

Graduates of Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science can pursue a wide range of careers related to environmental protection, natural resource management, research, and sustainability. They may work as Environmental Impact Assessors, Environmental Officers, Conservation and Resource Management Officers, Pollution Control Officers, Environmental Scientists, or Environmental Consultants. In these positions, they help assess environmental risks, monitor pollution, develop conservation strategies, ensure compliance with environmental laws, and recommend solutions to environmental problems.

Aside from field and regulatory work, BS Environmental Science graduates can also build careers in education, research, planning, and technical services. They may work as Teachers, Project Planners, Technical Personnel, Research Assistants, Research Analysts, or Quality Assurance Analysts. These roles allow graduates to contribute to scientific studies, environmental projects, data analysis, laboratory and quality control activities, and environmental education.

Overall, the degree provides diverse career opportunities in government agencies, private companies, research institutions, schools, consulting firms, and environmental organizations.

The Department of Forest Science, on behalf of CFES, is envisioned to serve as a prime mover in the pursuit of the national and global concern for sustainable management and conservation of forests and other natural resources. This is pursuant to the mandate given to CFES, VSU, in particular by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), as a Center of Excellence in Forestry Education in the Visayas.
