About the Program

The College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) is the largest and oldest college of the Visayas State University. It is a Center of Excellence in Agriculture and is among the leading institutions in the fields of soil science, crop and animal sciences, food science, and development communication in the Philippines.

The College is composed of nine (9) academic departments which include the Department of Animal Science (DAS), Department of Agronomy (DA), Department of Soil Science (DSS), Department of Agricultural Education & Extension (DAEEx), Department of Development Communication (DDC), Department of Food Science & Technology (DFST), Department of Plant Breeding & Genetics (DPBG), Department of Horticulture (DOH), and the Department of Pest Management (DPM).

 

 

Program highlights

  • The Department of Pest Management (DPM)
    - train students (both undergraduate and graduate) in the area of Plant Protection, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Weed Science.
    - conducts activities in research, extension and production in consonance with the program of the Visayas State University.
  • Undergraduate students who wished to major in plant protection therefore have four options to the fields of specialization they are going to pursue.
  • DPM now offers undergraduate and graduate courses in Plant Protection, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Weed Science
  • The faculty force of the department is composed of 8 regular faculty members  (4 PhD degree holders,  4  with MS degree); 3 Professor Emeriti and 3 affiliate faculty (one PhD, one PhD Candidate and one MS degree holder)

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Plant Protection can be:

  1. Instructors in various agricultural colleges and universities.
  2. Researchers and extension workers in government and private agencies whose concern is agricultural production and all its aspects in science research and administration, forest protection and management.
  3. Quarantine officers in airports and seaports.

They also have bright prospects in the private sector particularly in agribusiness enterprises and the pesticide industry. They may also apply for work or graduate studies abroad. Enterprising graduates may start small scale business in pest control, apiculture, sericulture, mushroom production, medicinal and pesticidal gardening, weed and butterfly preservation for handicraft and aesthetic value, and other similar undertakings.
