One of the main highlights of the 89th VSU Anniversary Celebration was the Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day (FFD) on August 11, 2013 at the VSU Convention Center. The event is VSU’s way of acknowledging the role of farmers and fishers folk in countryside development and giving accolade for their achievements by adopting new technologies developed by some researchers and scientists of the University.

The Visayas State University (VSU) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) celebrated the National Year of Rice (NYR 2013) through the Capturing Rice Photo Contest, Rice Poster-Making Contest, and Rice Harvest Dance Festival as one of the highlights of the 89th VSU Founding Anniversary.

Sixty-six researchers/scientists from the different government agencies, academic institutions, and private firms in the country rubbed elbows on January 30-31, 2012 during the National Rootcrop RDE Validation Workshop held at the VSU’s Philippine Rootcrop Research and Training Center (PhilRootcrops) Training Hall.The two-day convergence of public and private stakeholders was meant to know the various government programs on root and tuber crops for improved coordination and collaboration, address specific objectives, and improve institutional, industry, and producer partnerships in relation to rootcrop industry.

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the VSU Culture and the Arts Center (CAC) and the 1st National Arts Month, the VSU Choral Ensemble under the tutelage of Mr. Jesus Freddy M. Baldos serenaded the VSU constituents with a tapestry of songs ranging from modern, pop to Philippine and Indonesian folksongs mostly sang in a capella and the rest with piano accompaniment. The post-valentine concert dubbed "Musical Kaleidoscope", which was held on February 17, 2012 at the VSU Convention Center, was the choir's second major concert and was staged for free.

Mr. Edgar "Egai" Talusan Fernandez, Consultant Curator of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Manila, was the keynote speaker during the 10th Culture and the Arts Center (CAC) Anniversary and 1st Arts Month Celebration of the Visayas State University. The opening program was held on February 3, 2012 at the VSU Convention Center with the theme "Advancing Local Creativity in the Arts."

Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, VSU President, together with other officials of the University, affirmed their membership to the Region Eight Administrators League (REAL), Inc. as they were inducted on February 6, 2012 as new members to the organization by Director Imelda C. Laceras, Regional Director of the Department of Budget and Management of Region 8 and President of REAL at the DPWH Multipurpose Hall, Government Center, Palo, Leyte.

There is a need to conduct a financial audit of all the research conducted with finances or budget coming from the General Appropriations Act (GAA), after the review, because based on the records of the Budget Office, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension OVPRE) is one of the sources of savings when the year ends.
