The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) in Barangay Catmon, Silago, Southern Leyte that will look into the preservation and protection of the watershed, increase water production and improvement of water quality, and biodiversity conservation in Barangay Catmon (where the project will be established) was signed on January 17, 2012 at the VSU Office of the President. The MOA between the Visayas State University, Municipality of Silago in Southern Leyte, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in San Juan, So. Leyte, and Barangay Catmon in Silago, was signed by Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, Hon. Manuel A. Labrador Sr., Forester Alejandro K. Bautista, and Mr. Alipio L. Dadap, Barangay Captain of Catmon, Silago, So. Leyte, respectively.

Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, VSU President, together with Ms. Roberta C. Lemos, Director of Finance; Ms. Erlinda S. Esguerra, Chief Accountant; Ms. Anita G. Godoy, Budget Officer; and Ms. Redempta L. Soria, Administrative Aide VI; participated in the Regional Budget Forum for Fiscal Year 2013 organized by the Department of Budget and Management of Region 8. The activity was conducted on January 20, 2012 at the DPWH Multi-Purpose Hall in Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

In enhancing the adoption of organic farming technology in Eastern Visayas, the Visayas State University (VSU) has established a Large-Scale Composting and Water Sufficiency Project in support of Enhancing Long-Term Food Security in Region 8 under the program "Enhancement of Food Security (EFOS) in the Visayas."

The University Student Services Office (USSO) conducted an echo-seminar on "Responsiveness to Cyber-Generated Concerns" on January 19, 2012 at the VSU's Center for Continuing Education. The seminar was an offshoot of the 8th Mid-Year Assembly and Seminar- Workshop of the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association – Cebu Chapter held on September 6-7, 2011 at St. Theresa's College in Cebu City attended by Ms. Carmencita S. Reyes, Guidance Coordinator, and Ms. Miriam M. Dela Torre, Guidance Counselor, of USSO.

Mr. Loreto P. Godoy, a 1999 BS in Agriculture major in Agronomy graduate of the then ViSCA, now VSU, and a resident of Barangay Can-ipa, Baybay City, Leyte, was awarded the 2011 Most Outstanding Farmer of Baybay City. The award was given during the Opening Program of the Baybay City Agri-Fair on December 16, 2011 held at the Activity Center of Prince-Baybay. As winner, he received a cash prize of P10,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Thirty focal persons from the 16 Regional Field Units (RFUs) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) attended the two-batch trainings on Cassava Processing and Utilization held at the PhilRootcrops Training Hall of the Visayas State University (VSU) in Baybay City, Leyte. The first batch was held last December 6-8, 2011 with 21 participants from 16 regions, while the second batch was held on January 10-12, 2012 attended by 7 focal persons from Regions V, VI, VII and VIII.

After the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on the "Integrated and Diversified Program for the Development of the Ormoc-Kananga (OK) Upland Range" between the Visayas State University, the Energy Development Corporation-Leyte Geothermal Production Fields (EDC-LGPF), Partners Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PMPC), National Agribusiness Corporation (NABCOR), and the Department of Agriculture (DA) on December 12, 2011 at the Patio Victoria, San Jose, Tacloban City, the implementation of the Phase 1 of the project valued at 92 million pesos is now in full-throttle for the next five years.
